In 1872, editor J.G. Holland suggested to Scribner’s that they publish a children’s magazine similar to the one they already published for adults. Thinking it a wonderful idea, the publishers immediately chose Mary Mapes Dodge as the magazine’s editor. Ms. Dodge was best known, then as now, for her beloved children’s novel, “Hans Brinker; or The Silver Skates.” Under Dodge’s direction, St. Nicholas became a “child’s playground; where children could be delighted as well as be in charge.” Contributors to the magazine included noted illustrators Charles Dana Gibson, Arthur Rackham, Norman Rockwell, Palmer Cox and Howard Pyle. Ms. Dodge spent her later years at her home in Onteora Park, Tannersville, NY where she died in 1905. Upon her death, the children of Tannersville held a procession in her honor.
