Scenic Drives
Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway
State Routes 23A (Kaaterskill Clove) and 214 (Stony Clove) as well as Platte Clove Road, are designated NY State Scenic Roads. According to Town of Hunter Supervisor Dennis Lucas, “Our mountain cloves area unique, natural, cultural, recreational and historic resources. The cloves and the routes that connect them have been attractions for over a century.” One of the best times to travel these historic roads is during fall foliage season in the Catskill High Peaks.

Drive deep into the Catskills. The forests are typically oak and hickory laced with hemlock, beech, sugar and red maple.

It’s not the Himilaya’s, but the views are from the following points are breathtaking, and they ‘re easy to  access:

  • The site of the Catskill Mountain House—There’s almost no trace of what was once described as “America's Grandest Hotel.” What is left, however, is one of the best views of foliage in the Catskills. Just east of Haines Falls on State Road 23A, access is from the North and South Lakes Campground. The site can also be reached by hiking the Escarpment Trail. North and South Lakes are surrounded by spectacular fall foliage as well.
  • You can reach the summit of Hunter Mountain by Sky Ride (fee involved) or  a day-long hike to the top with extensive foliage vistas along the way. Don’t forget to visit the bluestone sculpture now being created at the top of the mountain.
  • Point Lookout Mountain Inn on Rte. 23 in East Windham was once a stopping off point for early Native Americans who loved to hunt the High Peaks for fish and game, but loathed to stay overnight because of the hijinks of a malevolent  mountain spirit known as the Manitou. This spot affords a panoramic view of five states, including the White Mountains in New Hampshire, 180 miles away.

Fall foliage attractions are very close to the main scenic drives in the area. State Road 23 from Cairo to Windham and State Road 23A from Palenville to Hunter, both climb into the Catskill High Peaks from the east.
State Road 296 from Brooksburg to Hunter,  State Road 214 from Tannersville to Phoenicia, County Rote. 16 and Bloomer Road will bring you to Platte Clove, with another spectacular view of fall foliage. Rte. 23A from Tannersville to County Rte. 17 in Lexington, across to Rte. 23A east through Windham, returning to Hunter via Rte. 296, then east from 296 to 23A and back to Tannersville will also provide you with another scenic routes during fall foliage season.
